While foreign ingredients are needed for the production process, foreign medicines are imported mainly because they can’t be formulated in the country yet.
The market is derived mostly by the aging population. Being a young country in the past, Iran has faced with a decrease in birth rate in the recent decades.

With a governmental support for domestically production of pharmaceuticals, domestic producers can supply 95% of the needed drugs. Though this 95% includes those drugs that just have had a packaging change in the country. Although the official data tell that the imported drugs are only 5% of the total market volume, but they considerably worth near 40% of the total market value!
Despite a decrease in the volume of consumed drugs in the recent years, the total value has been increased which shows a positive growth in consuming foreign drugs. This enthusiasm for consuming foreign drugs, even when there are similar Iran-made products, is mainly because during the sanctions time Iran had to import needed ingredients for the formulation process from India and China that don’t supply high quality ingredients.
