Overview
Despite owning one of the largest fossil fuel reserves in the world – oil and gas -, Iran is still unable to make the best use of these resources. The country not only lacks in modern technology of extraction and processing but in funds for investing in this important industry too.
Although Iran has started paying attention to petrochemicals as the major subset of the oil industry in recent decades, these efforts have not been enough for a country with over 33,800,000 million cubic meters of gas and 158,400 million barrels of oil proven reserves. For example, as an effort for increasing the production volume in the petrochemical industry, Ethan production as the most important food for the petrochemical industry enhanced. But the country still lacks more than 3 million tons a year of this fuel to feed the increased number of petrochemical companies.
However, the increasing number of petrochemical companies indicates the growth trend of the industry which makes the need for foreign investment more urgent.
Now, the installed capacity of the petrochemical industry is 64 million tons, and main available feed for it is natural gas. But the country is running projects to replace it with Ethan, Naphtha, Propene, and Butane in the near future.
